This all started when I was 22 and running around with Ann a friend who I met while I was working at the Telephone Co. She wanted to go to the skating rink one night and thinking that was a spendid idea we were off. Little did I know that there were a lot of sailors attending also, and that was really cool., so we decided to go back again the next night we got a chance. After that we met two sailors that seemed interested in us, and when it was time to leave we went over to Tiny's resturant for coffee with the two sailors in tow. Ann was sitting with a guy name Gayl and I was with Ross. Then after they walked us home to her house, and we talked a bit before they took off for the base. I wasn't really interested in either at the time, and especially Gayl who I thought was pretty full of himself, and a big show off. The next time we went it was funny as Gayl paid more attention to me and I started to think he wasn't that bad. When we went for coffee that night it was Gayl who sat with me much to Ann's surprised, and she wasn't to happy about it. I had to go home that night instead of Ann's, so we started out a bit to late and missed the bus, so he walked me all the way home and got me there really late. We were talking, and kissing before Gayl had to leave for the base, and wouldn't you know my Dad, who was a BIG man, came out on the porch in his bathrobe and told me if I ever did this again I could find a new place to live. Well, Gayl split like he had been shot out of a cannon, and I figured that was the last time he would be interested in me. Not so as he came back, so guess he liked what he saw, Father and all.
I met Gayl in Feb. and he propose on Fri. June the 13th. Our wedding was on a Sat Nov. 21st.,and we were married on the base at Moffitt Field. We didn't have a lot of money so couldn't decorate the church very much and when we went into decorate with what we had the minister was very apologetic that they hadn't taken the beautiful flowers down yet from the funeral that morning. Seeing the chance to have more flowers we asked if we could use them too, and were delighted when he said that was fine, so we were really excited about that. the chapel really did look nice when we finished.
My legs were shaking so bad when Dad walked me down the aisle that I wasn't sure if I was going to make it and Gayl didn't help any as he looked scared to death. My sis tried to get him to smile but forget that. After we were pronounce man and wife Gayl kissed me and the minister kept saying to us to break it up. He had his B'day party to go to and wanted out of there. I thought that was a little rude.LOL
The man who was suppose to take a lot of pic's of the wedding, actually did a terrible job as he was quite wasted, so we only had a few taken at the church, and it was just as bad when we went to my parents house for the reception for we had a big bowl of punch that wasn't suppose to be spiked, but you know how that goes when there are a bunch of guys who think it should be spiked. We had a lady come to the reception that didn't drink because of her religion, so Mom said no booze. Needless to say the friend drank a lot of the spiked punch and thought it was wonderful. Wonder if she had a hangover the next day.
The picture is of, Dad, Mlee, me, bestman (name not remembered) and Mom.
Before the reception was over Dad said to get ready to leave and he would pulled the breaker to turn off all the lights so we could make our get away without being followed. We did get away but someone saw us take off out of the neighbors drive and they were on for the chase. We out foxed them and hid behind a grocery store until we were sure they were gone. Then we went to our car and drove up to Santa Cruz to a cabin a friend let us use for our honeymoon.
Last but not least I have to say the minister told Mom it wasn't going to last, but we managed to make it last 46 years. A little rough at times but that is what life is all about, isn't it??
